Learner stories
What happens when learners start from something real.
Best Mission Patch award
Two JEP learners designed a mission patch for an international space design competition, and their design won the Best Mission Patch award (announced at the competition's online award ceremony). The patch shows a rocket rising from a green planet, with the words Spectrum Space Team and Learning Beyond Limits.
For SXLA's Founder, it carried one lesson: "exposure can reveal ability." The learners had not suddenly become more talented. They had been shown what was possible.

The S4 liquid soap team
An S4 learner team makes liquid soap for the school, which used to buy it from outside suppliers that were costly and late (UGX 45,000). The school now buys the ingredients and pays the team a small labour fee.
The team started from a real need in their own school, the kind of starting point JEP is built around. The photograph at the top of this page shows the team at work.
- Before
The school bought liquid soap from outside suppliers that were costly and late (UGX 45,000).
- Now
The school buys the ingredients, the S4 team makes the soap, and the team is paid a small labour fee.
- What learners practise
Starting from a real need, measuring, testing and improving a product that others rely on.

How we tell learners' stories
- We do not publish full names or other identifying details of learners online.
- We use photographs only with written consent and the learner's assent.
