Impact and evidence
What JEP aims to develop in learners, what our 2025 programme assessment found, and how we will measure change from 2027.

What learners develop
Entrepreneurial capabilities that matter whatever a learner does next. Not every learner will start a business, and JEP does not expect them to.
- Problem-solvingStudying a real problem, finding its causes and testing what works.
- InitiativeStarting something, instead of waiting for someone else to.
- CreativityImagining and designing responses that do not exist yet.
- Financial understandingWorking out costs, resources and value, at home, at school and in a venture.
- Building useful solutionsTurning knowledge into something that works for real people.
Forms of impact
- Better practices at home or at school
- Community interventions
- Research
- Products
- Services
- Enterprises, for some
Honest status. These are intended outcomes. Results from JEP with the Hybrid Edge JEP Studio are not yet available. A baseline and a comparison group start in 2027. The findings below are SXLA's own internal evidence.
Why these capabilities matter
Why it matters: most working people in Uganda are not employees, and many young people create their own work. Seeing a problem and building something useful helps on any path; entrepreneurship is no guarantee of employment.
All results below are SXLA's own evidence: internal, not yet independently verified.
What our 2025 programme assessment found
On SXLA's five-level scale, JEP learners were rated 4 (Capable) against peers' 2 (Emerging) on noticing problems, choosing tools and taking initiative. On transfer to new situations, both were rated 2: no gap yet. (Internal, not yet independently verified.)

What comes next
A baseline and a comparison group start in 2027, so that future reports show measured change. An independent mid-term review is planned for 2028.

What we have learned
- Design and delivery are ahead of measurement, so we are investing first in baselines and a comparison group.
- Learners respond when they start from something real.
- Technology that depends on the internet often fails in rural schools, so the Hybrid Edge JEP Studio is designed to work locally first.
Learner work
Best Mission Patch award
Two JEP learners won the Best Mission Patch award in an international space design competition.
